PPSMI: MENGAPA MESTI TUNGGU TIGA TAHUN LAGI?

Abdullah in favour of reversal to BM

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is in favour of the Government’s move to revert the teaching of Mathematics and Science to Bahasa Malaysia, saying that there were strong pressures for such a move during his tenure as prime minister.

“There were many groups who had asked that the policy be reviewed. We wanted to implement it first in 2003 until now, and I think that is fair,” the former prime minister told reporters after launching an exhibition of mosques in Germany at the Islamic Arts Museum here yesterday.

He denied that it was a flip-flop decision, saying that it was made after six years of analysis.

“It was not something the Government did suddenly.”

Asked if the policy reversal was meant to uphold the use of Bahasa Malaysia as a national language, he said the previous policy had not achieved the desired results.

“It was actually a failure,” he said, adding that the policy reversal seemed to have received the support of the majority.

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has set up a blog poll as an indicator of public sentiments.

Dr Mahathir, who mooted the use of English to teach the two subjects, said he was not surprised that many people were disappointed with the reversal.

“It seems to me like the Government is not listening to the people. Perhaps, a blog poll might enlighten the Government as to the opinions of the people,” he said in his blog www.chedet.co.cc.

The blog’s one-question poll asked readers to click either “Yes” or “No” to the decision to teach Mathematics and Science in Bahasa Malaysia.

As at 7pm yesterday, 74% or the 5,463 respondents chose “No”. They can only vote once.

Dr Mahathir said he would inform the Government of the poll results.(The Star, 10 July 2009)

Komen:

Rakyat kena tanya pelawak Nabil, "Lu fikirlah sendiri!".
